Hubert
EXPLORING HOW AUGMENTED REALITY EXTENDS NARRATIVE CAPABILITIES.
MA Graphic Arts. 2022.
“Hubert” is an Augmented Reality Graphic Novella. Created, Written, Illustrated and Animated by Megan Hunt as a final project for her Masters in Graphic Arts at the University of the West of England. It follows the story of Hubert; a lonely ghost, whose antics in the supernatural realm can only be traced using a mobile device and Augmented Reality technology, powered by Eyejack.
A homage to both printed and digital mediums, the project aimed to explore how printed narratives can be modernised, and exploit the prevalence of mobile phones and emergent tech without losing the charm and integrity of physical graphic novels.
“Hubert” was born from my desire to pay homage to both the physicality of the book whilst acknowledging the power and prevalence of emergent tech. With the facilities available to me during my MA, I wanted the opportunity to develop my skills across illustration, animation, and visual narrative. How can the graphic novel be popularised, or furthered by AR tech, rather than competing with the prevalence of videos and instantly-consumable media?
The final novella was created over 6 months – from storyboarding, hand-drawn digital illustrations, animation, AR set-up and print finishing/binding all completed to a tight schedule.
