“50 Things.”
MA Graphic Arts. 2021.
As part of an exploration of self and information design, the brief was to create an A2 poster that displayed ‘“50 things” or pieces of information integral to our personalities.
The finished piece includes strong influences from music, literature, and other formative mediums; important artworks, challenges, and experiences that have shaped me as a person and creator.
The Process
The first stage of the project was collecting 50 pieces of information about myself that could be represented visually. In order to make this more manageable, the “facts” were categorised into several sectors, and colour coded for quick reference.

The next stage in my process was to work out how I would represent the time frame of my “facts” and how different aspects of my life (location/event/like or dislike) interlinked.
My first attempt was to rearrange my original list into date order chronologically, however, I was left with more than a few outliers.
Unable to show these relationships with a linear layout, and I needed to put pen to paper to really envisage how the components all worked together.
The final stage before the layout was hand-illustrating any of the assets/icons which would be visually presented on the poster. I wanted to combine the personality of my drawing style with my layout and grid knowledge as a graphic designer; using markers in muted colours to create custom illustrations that complemented the clean lines, text and 70s colour scheme.
